The Latvian Wedding Sock

Latvian Wedding Sock I am officially in love with this sock.  I’ve never really done Fair Isle knitting, mainly because I am just not fond of all the different colors and stranding them throughout the work, and most of the patterns just haven’t caught my eye.  In the past, that is.  All of a sudden I am finding Fair Isle sock patterns all over that I am really interested in, but none like this sock.

One thing I like is that this is really a two-color sock.  The plain background color of course and then a self striping color for the pattern work.  It will look like I used a ton of colors but without the pain in the neck of that kind of work.

I can’t justify putting this on the needles this month, but maybe next month, depending on how much I can get done from my WIP.  I am too good at starting new projects so I’ll hold off on this one a little bit.  But I am pretty sure I’ll have it here to start by Spring.

The pattern can be found at The Knitting Zone.  They have a bunch of great patterns and it is instant gratification; buy the pattern and download it!  I like that because I can print it when I am ready to work on it and I don’t have to worry about the pattern getting dog-eared or otherwise damaged.

Take a look at the Latvian Wedding Sock at The Knitting Zone and while you are there, check out the other Fair Isle sock patterns.  The Bird Foot Sock also appeals to me; it is similar to this one but is a black background with the multicolored pattern work.  I am sure you will find something that will work just for you!

Beyond Fashionably Late

It is just plain late - as in really , really late.  I have discovered it is a lot easier to let a blog go and become tardy than it is to keep posting when life isn’t all that conducive to posting.  It has been almost a year!  But I needed the time off - no blogs, no writing, no “anything-I-have-to-do” stuff… and I think it was good for me.  So what has been going on, in the knitting and crochet, for the past twelve months?

I have completed some small projects that were lying around and driving me nuts by being incomplete.  Nothing spectacular and nothing photographed, but all the same they were very distracting.  I have as a defiinite thing about unfinished tasks around me.  And that is true whether they are my projects or the hobbies and crafts of other people.

I admit it.  I am a starter and not a real great finisher.  I get excited about a new project and can hardly wait to get going on it.  It’s a really bad habit!  It does create an interesting yarn stash though and if I change my mind on what to make out of the yarn, I have a lot of stuff to choose from.  Socks become gloves, mittens become socks… but as long as it is used and is useful, I guess it really doesn’t matter.

So on the hook or on the needles now:

  • Green Striped Sweater for daughter (C)
  • Chocolate Cherry Shrug for daughter (C)
  • Dark Green Celtic Cardigan for me (K)
  • Several amigurumi patterns (C)
  • Prayer Shawl for a swap (late on this) (C)
  • Seraphina Shawls (about four in varying weights/colors, some almost done) (C)
  • Cat Graphed Afghan (C)
  • Dance Socks for daughter (K)

And I have the projects ready to move into empty spots when the above are completed.  For now, I work on the yarn that I am in the mood to look at - usually by color, sometimes by yarn weight.  I also am pushing to get those that are almost done finished - big push right now for the green sweater and the chocolate cherry shrug, both for my daughter.  They are pretty close to becoming FO’s.

So back to blogging, back to working on UFO’s and back to life as “normal.”  I hope you visit my other blogs:

Hope to see you!

Knitted Lingerie - Ooh La La !

This will chase away the post-Christmas blues! I found two sites today I absolutely had to share with you. These are so pretty and elegant I dare you to not buy a pattern. Some of them are a bit on the naughty side (said with a grin) and I never would have thought lingerie like this would be knitted. But these are and they are pretty.

The first page has 17 patterns ranging from nighties to a panty/bra set, and if you can believe it, a pair of edible panties. I am NOT giving away the ingredients but if you have a chinese restaurant and a grocery store nearby, you will be able to locate the supplies.

There are other things on this page that could be knit up quickly for Valentine’s Day and if nothing else, you will certainly get a smile out of the patterns. These patterns come from Knitty.com which is a wonderful source for free patterns on the Internet; generally I have found free patterns to be something to approach with caution. The people at Knitty.com have given us only the best.

Lingerie at Knitty.com

The second site absolutely made my knitting needles start twitching in anticipation. It is called “White Lies Designs,” and they have patterns for men, women, children and to knit accessories. But it was their lingerie section that I had to let you know about. The one I want to make so much is called the Madeline Jacket and can be found under Ladies Cardigans - it certainly isn’t your garden-variety cardigan and I want it!!

The lingerie section at “White Lies,” has some of the most innovative patterns I have seen. The designer has truly found the edge of the envelope with this set and it is elegant and classy.

The baby doll with boy shorts set is completely seductive, yet innocent. The waist/cincher garter belt is for someone who would dare to wear it (I think I am going to pass that one up for one of you younger gals), and the Nicole camisole would make a beautiful shower gift for a bride. They even have lace stockings - like hoisery, not socks - these are elegant lace knitted with a stretchy cotton/elastic yarn.

I truly have never seen anything quite like this page and I know you will love it. These patterns are meant for experienced knitters so if you have just learned, buy the patterns you love, and tuck them away until your skills reach the level to accomplish the work. It won’t take long. Knitting patterns like these are a lot of fun!

White Lies Design

You just never know what you might find in knitting patterns. I know that when my grandmother crocheted and my mom knitted, they never saw or envisioned patterns such as these! Knitting has arrived for all generations and the patterns have updated to reflect the “new knitter.”

Delightful Christmas Angel Washcloth

angelI found an adorable little pattern that shouldn’t take you much time at all to knit up for yourself or for a quick Christmas gift. I am thinking of knitting up several and having them wrapped for those “emergency” occasions when I need a present and don’t have one handy. You know those terrible moments when someone shows up with a gift and you have nothing? This is a great solution. It is also a wonderful addition to a beautiful self-indulgence present. Add it to a package that contains a gift certificate for a day of pampering. Or to someone who decorates their house, and especially their kitchen or bathroom, especially for Christmas.

All you will need is some good cotton yarn - weight will determine finished size - I would go with a worsted weight that is one of your favorites for washcloths or dishcloths. Then a little time and you will have a precious little Christmas angel to add to the holiday celebrations.

Holiday Travel: Airlines and Knitting

Since 9-11 there have been many changes about what is allowed on an airplane. It used to be that knitters and crocheters never worried about hauling their projects along, but those days have changed. Long metal knitting needles are no longer acceptable. Circular needles have definite issues as well. There is a lot of confusion about what can and cannot go on board. 60

“Purple Kitty” has some guidelines that are helpful for travelers. So do a couple of articles at “Knitty.” I would suggest printing these out or saving it in some manner that you can reference, even if you rarely travel.

Getting to the airport and facing a long flight without your knitting might be more than you can handle; I wouldn’t even attempt it. This information should help a lot. I would also suggest you call the airline or speak to a travel agent if you have one. Any inside information could save you a lot of yarn withdrawal symptoms!

The Proper Way To Knit An Argyle Sock

I love argyle.  Of all the patterns, and especially all of the plaids, argyle is my favorite. I like it in sweaters, vests and especially in socks.   I also admit that it is somewhat challenging to knit.  I have never enjoyed changing colors.  I think it is a psychological block.  I prefer textures, but loving argyle as I do, it is a psychological block I am overcoming.  The one question I have had, is one I finally found an answer to the other day.  How do you know if you are knitting an argyle sock properly?

Not only does this page offer reassurance on the proper appearance of an argyle sock in progress, it also provides some hints and tips to make argyle patterns.  The progressive series of photos make it even easier.

If you like the retro look, or classic look, of argyle, try a pair of socks.  This guide will help you get through the first pair so you understand the mechanics of argyle.  Then you can be hooked on this particular look right along with me.

Sock-ret Pal Questionnaire

I am involved in the Sockret Pal 2 KAL and we are supposed to put our information up on our blog. So if you aren’t interested in this bit of nonsense that is just about me, feel free to skip this posting.

THE BASICS:

How long have you been knitting? I started when I was ten, took a hiatus into crochet for a long time, and returned about 10 years ago. I knit much more than crochet now. :)
Do you consider yourself a beginning sock knitter, an intermediate, or have you been doing this so long you could probably knit a pair in your sleep? I would say I am probably an intermediate knitter - I can (and have) done some in my sleep but those would be the basic patterns. If they have any decorative stitches or color patterns, I need to be awake. ;)
The measurements: While your pal may ask for some additional info to ensure a great fit, please provide your shoe size, or any other fitting related info you think is pertinent. I am just a basic average size 8 shoe.

Favorites: What colors do you love? Pastels - blue, pink, white, yellow, green and in the bold colors I love bright pink, any shade of blue except navy, denim blue… I love all colors though and have a place for just about any color in my life.

Do you prefer solids or variegated? I love both. It would depend what it is for. I love the self-striping because I love the way the colors work out. My most favorite though is argyle - any color, any argyle pattern - if it is argyle I love it.

What fibers do you most love to knit with? Wool is my favorite and wool blends as well. Silk, alpaca - I am not crazy about cotton yarn to knit or to wear in socks.

Who do you consider your favorite yarn vendors? Schoeller Stahl is a favorite. So is Brown Sheep. I love Katia, Knit Picks Peruvian. I also like Plymouth Encore and others from Plymouth. Some Lion Brands are nice for an economy yarn.

What projects (other than socks, of course*S*) do you most enjoy knitting? Mittens, shawls, washcloths, shrugs… lots of things! :)
Dislikes:What fibers can you not stand to knit with? To wear? I don’t care for cotton socks and I don’t like pure nylon for much of anything because of the lack of “breathability.” I don’t like mohair - I don’t know why - it has just never been something I liked the feel of.

What colors would you never wear? I avoid red - just doesn’t work on me too well.

The Tools:Plastic or Metal? Bamboo or wood? I like those new needles that are a flexible plastic - Bryspun makes them. I also like some other plastics (as long as the yarn doesn’t stick to them). I also like the bamboo and woods. I do not care for metal at all.

Circs or Straights? Straight if possible. Circs drive me nuts unless it is a huge project.

DPNs or Magic Loop? DPN almost always! I have done magic loop and it is okay but I much prefer DPNs.

Are there any knitting accessories you don’t have in your collection but would like? A sheep measuring tape!

The Extras:Do you have a wish list? If so, please share the link! Just at Amazon -http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/ref=yourlists_pop_1/102-2523167-0652145

Do you like sweet, sour or salty? (or all of the above? *S*) Sweet or salty. Don’t like sour.

Do you have any allergies your pal should know about? (Certain foods, smoke, pet hair, etc) Nope - well except I shouldn’t eat chocolate. I love it but it doesn’t love me.

Favorite scents? Scents you can’t stand? Nothing in particular comes to mind.

Do you collect anything (other than yarn and knitting toys of course)? Oh yes! I collect windchimes, teddy bears and nun dolls.

When is your birthday? (month and day is fine!) October 12

Do you spin? Dye your own yarn? No, I haven’t started that yet. I don’t know if will - dying I would like to try but spinning I don’t think is for me.

Your favorite author/band/vacation spot, anything you think will help your pal know you better... I love many authors and I like my music quiet and in the background. Many people call the music I like New Age Music but I don’t relate to that name. I love William Ackerman as an example. Love violin,k particulrly Joshua Bell. I love my cats - they are my bestest buddies. I love to watch movies and certain television films and/or documentaries. I love having pen pals and don’t have a lot of close friends which I would like to change. I have a disabled son which forces some degree of isolation into my life. I just opened a blog network and am staying busy with that - I am fortunate to love my work - I am an author and can’t think of anything I would rather do for a living. I was widowed four and a half years ago and it has been a difficult time for me. I miss my husband every moment, of every day.

Come Saturday Morning

September Sky 092306

It’s been raining!  And that is a big deal out here because we are living in near-drought conditions.  It has been raining for about 18 hours.  This photograph was taken at about 7:00 this morning and it is looking out over a farmer’s field that has just been plowed.  I think he is getting ready to plant winter wheat but being that I know zilch about farming, I can’t be sure of that.  You can’t see the rain of course, and at this point it was light, but we are all grateful for it.  It was a long, very hot summer, and with the forest fires, even more so.  This is very welcome rain!

So what do you do on a rainy Saturday?  Yes, of course you knit, but you do something else first.  SLEEP!  I took advantage of the darker sky and the quiet house (which is a very relative term here) and slept almost all day, which means I slept until 3:00pm and it felt glorious!!  That is one thing I love about Fall.  My favorite Fall days are the crisp sunny ones but I always think of a rainy day as a gift and an invitation to relax.

I once read that we love bad weather not because of the "bad" weather (cold, rain, wind, snow) itself, but because of our imperviousness to it.  Interesting thought.  It is wonderful to have a day of unseasonable weather and it is because we want to snuggle down in our comforters or curl up in front of a nice fire in the fireplace with a great book.  It has nothing to do with what is going on outside.  It has everything to do with our response to it and what we do with that time.

Now after sleeping, it is knitting time.  And I have some goals today!  I need desperately to finish two gifts.  One for a friend and one for my mom.  And I can’t talk about either one because they read this blog.  But that is what I am working on today and tonight.  I’ll be watching movies too.  Maybe if I am really lucky the wind will pick up a little and the rain will start again.

Ready for winter wheat?

A Mitten Knit Along

I need another KAL (Knit Along) like I need another hole in the head.  But there are some things I love to knit and because I love to knit them, I will whether I am in a KAL or not.  Therefore, according to Adelle’s logic, why not join a KAL for it?  And since I love mittens, and there is a great KAL for mittens just starting… well you can guess the rest.

This KAL is starting right now.  There aren’t a lot of rules, and since it starts in September, 2006, this is the perfect time to join in.  You don’t have to have a blog to participate.  It promises to be a lot of fun and I hope to see you there!
